City of Pittsburgh Launches New Building And Zoning Information Website
Building permit, license, violation and zoning information more accessible to public through mapping tool
PITTSBURGH, PA (October 11, 2016) – (RealEstateRama) — Mayor William Peduto, the City of Pittsburgh Departments of Permits, Licenses and Inspections (PLI) and City Planning (DCP) today announced buildingeye, a new public website mapping tool designed to make building permit, license and code enforcement actions within the City of Pittsburgh more accessible.
In July 2016, City Council approved a bill enabling the city to enter into a software and support services contract with “buildingeye,” a firm that builds interactive city maps to track planning, permit, license and violation data.
“We have been committed to improving the way the public interacts with local government and buildingeye is the latest example of this innovative work,” said Mayor William Peduto. “This tool will provide residents better transparency on city permits and neighborhood development.”
The free website, created in collaboration with buildingeye, Inc., is updated nightly. Data displayed on the site is public information pertaining to building permits issued by PLI, active location based licenses, planning applications and code enforcement actions. Residents, businesses, developers and others will be able to view and search a detailed map that shows all building and zoning data happening in every neighborhood citywide.
“This website is an important tool for citizens of Pittsburgh to engage with their neighborhoods,” said PLI Director Maura Kennedy. “It’s another step towards making Permits, Licenses, and Inspections a more transparent, accountable, and predictable department.”
The software has been customized to meet the needs of Pittsburgh residents and to answer common questions relating to PLI issues. A user can easily narrow down a search through detailed filters or browse data within a specific area of interest. Residents can register for an account and receive notifications when an action – pertaining to a permit, license, or code enforcement – is submitted to the PLI databases. The Pittsburgh buildingeye site can also be utilized to verify violation reporting. Residents that witness a possible violation can search the buildingeye site for appropriate permit or notice of violation documentation. If a permit or notice is not documented, residents are encouraged to contact the City of Pittsburgh 311 Response Center to report an issue for enforcement.
“This is a great step forward for everyone who cares about Pittsburgh,” said City Planning Director Ray Gastil. “buildingeye provides residents with up to date information on where and what is happening in the planning process for the built environment and is a tremendous asset to the future of the city.”
The deployment of buildingeye is one of the many recent changes underway within the Department of Permits, Licenses and Inspections designed to make the department more customer-friendly and efficient for residents and businesses. In November 2015 PLI launched a public property violations website. In May 2016 Mayor Peduto and Director Kennedy announced several improvements and upgrades to PLI customer service, technology and staffing operations.
The initial cost is $66,000 for a one year subscription, $15,000 allocated from Planning’s budget and $51,000 from PLI’s budget. Subscription renewals cost $15,000/quarter for up to one additional year.
