Fattah Announces $58 Million in Housing Grants to Philadelphia
WASHINGTON – September 28, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — Congressman Chaka Fattah (PA-02), a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, announced that Philadelphia has received $58 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for a variety of programs that will serve Philadelphia’s homeless and low-income communities.
The funds come from four different grant programs; Philadelphia will receive $39 million in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds, $8 million in HOME program funds, nearly $7.5 million in HOPWA (Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS) funds, and $3.5 million in Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG) support.
“As a long-time champion of the Community Development Block Grant program, I am especially pleased to announce $39 million in new CDBG support to the Philadelphia community. CDBG is a critical lifeline for cities across this nation, offering recipients the flexibility to tailor the funds to the needs of each specific community,” Congressman Fattah said. “Every dollar awarded from HUD today will go towards helping Philadelphia’s underserved, low-income, and homeless families gain access to important housing and economic resources. This grant funding is integral to Philadelphia’s ability to provide sufficient affordable housing and community development support to our residents.”
As a co-chair of the Congressional Urban Caucus, Fattah has led the fight in Congress to sustain and increase funding for the CDBG program. Now in its 41st year, the CDBG program continues to impact millions of Americans; HUD estimates that between 2005 and 2013 the program was responsible for creating or retaining approximately 330,500 jobs, providing public services to more than 100 million individuals, and assisting more than one million households.
