Mayor Peduto Lauds the Power of Impact Volunteering and AmeriCorps, Senior Corps Participants in Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH, PA – April 7, 2016 – (RealEstateRama) — Mayor William Peduto and the City of Pittsburgh today are celebrating the valuable service of AmeriCorps and Senior Corps volunteers in Pittsburgh as part of the fourth annual Mayor and County Recognition Day for National Service. Along with Mayor Peduto, more than 2,800 mayors and county officials across the country are highlighting the impact of national service in tackling city problems.
“I’d like to thank the members of AmeriCorps and Senior Corps for their continued commitment to strengthening our communities through service. Today is a great day to celebrate all of the dedicated individuals that improve the quality of life in our region and workforce every day.”
Mayor Peduto will issue a proclamation to AmeriCorps and Senior Corps participants declaring April 5, 2016 “National Service Recognition Day” in the City of Pittsburgh. The event will take place at Pittsburgh Cares (3505 Butler St, Pittsburgh, PA 15201) at 5:30 p.m. The proclamation is dedicated to the more than 850 AmeriCorps members and Senior Corps volunteers in Pittsburgh that are serving this year.
The Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service is a nationwide bipartisan effort designed to recognize the positive impact of national service in cities, to thank those who serve and to encourage citizens to give back to their communities. The day is sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the National League of Cities, the National Association of Counties and Cities of Service.
Pittsburgh is also a founding member of Cities of Service, the national coalition of cities whose mayors have committed to impact volunteering to engage residents as co-producers of solutions that make a difference on issues from blight to supporting youth and education.
“I am proud to be working with Mayor Peduto and the City of Pittsburgh as we continue to strengthen communities through national service,” said Wendy Spencer, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service. “Mayors are leaders who get things done. They know first-hand the value of national service in tackling local problems. I commend Mayor Peduto for working with us to improve lives and strengthen communities through national service.”
As the federal agency for service and volunteering, CNCS annually engages more than five million citizens in service at more than 60,000 locations in 8,500 cities across the country through AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and other programs. National service participants address the most pressing challenges facing our cities and nation, from educating students for the jobs of the 21st century and supporting veterans and military families to preserving the environment and helping communities recover from natural disasters.
