Murt Legislation Would Provide Property Tax Relief for Disabled Veterans
Harrisburg, PA – March 1, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — In an effort to provide property tax relief to Pennsylvania’s disabled veterans, Rep. Thomas P. Murt (R-Montgomery/Philadelphia) is joining with Rep. Doug Reichley (R-Lehigh/Berks) to introduce a pair of bills designed to help disabled veterans.
“As a veteran of the Iraq war, issues impacting Pennsylvania veterans have always been especially important to me,” said Murt. “As our fellow Pennsylvanians return from combat, we must be mindful of our obligations to ease the pain and suffering they endure as a result of military-related disabilities.”
Earlier this year, Reichley introduced House Bill 2224, which would amend Pennsylvania’s constitution by removing “served during a period of war” requirement and the “financial need” requirement for the Commonwealth’s Disabled Veteran Real Estate Exemption Program. This will provide 100 percent property tax relief for all disabled veterans regardless of whether their disability was sustained during wartime or peacetime. In addition, the bill would allow the surviving spouse of a soldier killed in action to qualify for this benefit.
Murt’s legislation, House Bill 2225, would provide a tax relief stipend to disabled veterans who are not 100 percent disabled. Those up to 30 percent disabled would receive a $200 rebate; those between 31 percent and 60 percent disabled would receive $350; and those 61 percent to 99 percent disabled would receive $500. Those considered 100 percent disabled would exempt from property taxes. This program would function in conjunction with Pennsylvania’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate program.
“I maintain my commitment to providing property tax relief to every Pennsylvanian,” Murt added. “But as we pursue that goal, we should be looking for opportunities to help those who need it most. These bills will allow us to provide immediate relief to our veterans who have sacrificed so much in defense of our freedoms.”
