State Invests $12.5 Million To Kick Off Williamsport Hospital Project

HARRISBURG, Dec. 28, 2007 – A renovation and expansion project at the Williamsport Hospital and Medical Center campus that will create 230 jobs is being jump-started by a $12.5 million grant from the commonwealth, the Department of Community and Economic Development announced today.

The commonwealth will offer a total of 12.5 million – $625,000 each year for 20 years – for debt service to the Lycoming County Industrial Development Authority for the $283.3 million project that includes a 380,000 sq. foot expansion and a new central utility plant, Department of Community and Economic Development Secretary Dennis Yablonsky said.  Susquehanna Health, of which Williamsport Hospital is a component, will ultimately contribute $270.8 million.

“Williamsport Hospital is a linchpin in a multi-county health system and Susquehanna Health is a large regional employer,” Secretary Yablonsky said. “Laying the groundwork to ensure its continued success is one of the best investments we can make, in terms of the community’s economic health and delivering quality health care that Pennsylvanians deserve.”

The funds were made available through the department’s Infrastructure and Facilities Improvement Program, an important component of Governor Rendell’s $2.8 billion economic stimulus package. Since launching the program in 2004, more than $17 million has been invested in at least 18 projects, leading to pledges of over 30,000 jobs.
