The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently distributed Centre County’s affordable housing “toolkit” to more than 170 municipalities across the Nation. According to A. Bryant Applegate, Co-Director of HUD’s America’s Affordable Communities Initiative, “Centre County’s Homes within Reach Toolkit is extremely well done, well thought out, and detailed. It also covers issues on the regulatory front that are often overlooked by communities. We hope that by sending it out to our ‘National Call to Action’ participants, it will serve as an example for others throughout the country to follow.”
Recognizing an information gap, the Centre County Affordable Housing Coalition worked with Erica Belser, a Penn State Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology graduate student, to develop the Homes Within Reach Toolkit: A Source of Options for Centre County Municipal Officials and Developers. The guide was developed to assist municipal officials and developers in promoting affordable housing.
The Toolkit includes definitions and statistics; puts a face on affordable housing in Centre County; identifies targeted populations; addresses development costs and barriers; provides land use planning option; and shows examples of affordable housing design.
