Marsico Issues Statement on the House Passing Legislation to Eliminate Property Taxes for Seniors

-

January 30, 2008 – Rep. Ron Marsico (R-Lower Paxton) issued the following statement today regarding the overwhelming support in the House of Representatives for a bill to eliminate property taxes for seniors:

“Last night, we passed legislation that would completely eliminate school property taxes for all Pennsylvania homeowners age 65 or older with incomes of up to $40,000. Under this legislation, qualifying seniors would send their school property tax bill to the Department of Revenue which would then send a check to the local school district. The funding to support this legislation would come from gaming revenue.

“Approximately 8,766 seniors in Dauphin County will see elimination of their property taxes.

“I voted in favor of this plan because my constituents supported the implementation of this type of legislation. I recently conducted a survey in my district and asked them, specifically, if they would support the elimination of property taxes for homeowners age 65 and over with incomes of $40,000 or less. Approximately 65 percent of respondents indicated that they would support this plan.

“It’s time that we give our senior citizens the break that they deserve. They have worked and paid taxes their entire lives. In their golden years, they should not have to worry about an ever-increasing tax burden. I hope this is the first step in repealing property tax for all taxpayers.”
