Rothfus Advocates Reforms to Federal Housing Programs

Washington, D.C. – February 3, 2016 – (RealEstateRama) — Congressman Keith Rothfus [PA-12] released the following statement after the House of Representatives voted to pass the Housing Opportunity Through Modernization Act (H.R. 3700), of which he is a cosponsor. The legislation, which has earned the support of housing advocacy and industry groups, reforms certain Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Rural Housing Service (RHS) programs to improve their effectiveness, reduce waste and abuse, and address barriers to participation for beneficiaries and providers. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the legislation will save taxpayers $311 million over the next five years.

During debate on the legislation on the House floor, Congressman Rothfus stated, “I have met many Pennsylvanians who have improved their lives and brightened their families’ futures, thanks in part to targeted federal housing assistance provided to them in their time of need. However, there are also cases where outdated rules, waste, fraud, abuse, and general inefficiency have made it difficult to direct resources to those who need them most. There are also instances where housing assistance programs have failed to help people lift themselves out of poverty. Members of both parties recognize this reality and have worked together to identify areas for improvement.”
