Specter and Casey announce HUD to Award Philadelphia Housing Authority $13.9 million to “Green” Public Housing Apartments

Washington, D.C. – September 21, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Senators Arlen Specter and Bob Casey today announced that the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded the Philadelphia Housing Authority $13,915,000 to complete a “green” public housing transformation to the Paschall Apartments.

“I am pleased to see the stimulus funds at work for Philadelphia’s public housing,” Senator Specter said. “These transformational activities are an important investment that will substantially reduce energy costs for these residents and the Philadelphia Housing Authority, as well as reduce greenhouse gas emissions attributable to energy consumption.”
“The Recovery Act continues to make positive investments in Pennsylvania’s people and future,” said Senator Casey. “These funds will reduce energy costs for Philadelphians while also promoting new clean energy jobs and protecting the environment.”

The grant for Paschall Apartments is part of 36 competitive grants that were awarded today across the country by Secretary of Housing Shaun Donavan. The funds are provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and are specifically designated for the creation of energy efficient communities through substantial rehabilitation or new construction of public housing developments.

The renovations to Paschall Apartments could include development of connections to neighborhoods and green space; site improvements that provide surface water management techniques that capture, retain, infiltrate and/or harvest rainfall; water conservation through the use of water-conserving appliances, fixtures and efficient irrigation; energy efficiency that meets Energy Star standards for new construction; and use of renewable energy resources.

The funding announced today is part of an additional $1 billion in Public Housing Capital Funds designated by the Recovery Act to be awarded competitively. HUD accepted applications under this program from public housing authorities between June 22 and August 18.
