Treasurer McCord Seeks to Return $232,000 in Unclaimed Property to Libraries, Bookstores and Literacy Organizations During National Library Week
Urges all organizations and businesses to search patreasury.gov and claim their cash
Harrisburg – April 15, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — More than $232,000 in unclaimed property is waiting to be claimed by libraries, books stores and literacy organizations across Pennsylvania, State Treasurer Rob McCord announced today during National Library Week.
“Local libraries are centers of education and engagement in our communities, but often deliver vital services on a tight budget, which is why we want to return the unclaimed property Treasury currently holds for them,” Treasurer McCord said. “Every dollar counts – whether it’s a large check or a smaller amount – so I urge libraries, other groups committed to improving literacy, and people who care about these types of organizations to search regularly at www.patreasury.gov for additional revenues in Treasury’s free unclaimed property database.”
Treasurer McCord asked his Return Team to identify unclaimed property that belongs to local libraries like the Catasauqua Public Library and the Elizabethtown Library, organizations like the Warren Library Association and the Lycoming County Literacy Project, and even book stores like the Ann Street Book Exchange and Windsor Park Books & News.
The Treasurer said the more than $232,000 his department holds for these organizations represents just a fraction of the $1.9 billion in unclaimed property Treasury currently seeks to reunite with businesses, organizations, and citizens. He encouraged everyone to search Treasury’s free unclaimed property database at www.patreasury.gov or call 1-800-222-2046, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A member of Treasury’s Return Team will assist them with their search and claim process.
Each year, Treasury receives millions of dollars in unclaimed property – things such as abandoned bank accounts, forgotten stocks, uncashed checks, and contents of safe deposit boxes. Since January 2009, the McCord Treasury has collected more than $921 million in property, returned more than $433 million to rightful owners, and generated about $488 million for the state’s General Fund through the Unclaimed Property Program.
