Penn State Creating Energy Science Center at Philadelphia’s Navy Yard
Philadelphia – April 25, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — Governor Tom Corbett broke ground for Penn State University’s new Center for Building Energy Science at The Navy Yard, showcasing multiple energy saving technologies.
“Pennsylvania has been leading the nation in finding new sources of energy and today marks the moment we add to our independence by finding new ways to conserve the energy we already have,’’ Corbett said. “This building will be a living laboratory where new ideas will be applied, tested and perfected.’’
Corbett was joined in the ceremonies today by Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, Penn State President Rodney Erickson, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency Kathleen Hogan and the U.S. Economic Development Administration’s Deputy Assistant Secretary Matt Erskine.
The project will create a new building and retrofit Building 661, renamed the Center for Building Energy Science. Together they will serve as the new headquarters for the Energy Efficient Buildings Hub (EEB Hub).
The Center for Building Energy Science will function as a living laboratory showcasing multiple energy saving technologies. The intent is to demonstrate how integrated design and construction methods can result in the cost-effective reduction of building energy use.
The EEB Hub performs research to develop and integrate materials, technologies, models, and tools to optimize whole building energy performance. The Hub scales adoption of proven solutions by addressing business and finance, education and training, and other issues.
