Congressman Fattah Announces HUD Funding for Residents of Blumberg Apartments
WASHINGTON – January 22, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — Congressman Fattah announced that the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded $2,956,010 to the Philadelphia Housing Authority (PHA) to help residents find new affordable housing options.
The voucher funds awarded will support the replacement of individuals who are affected by the demolishment of the Norman Blumberg Apartments. In 2015, the PHA announced that the Blumberg Apartments would be demolished, while the blocks immediately surrounding the housing development were targeted for extensive redevelopment. With the help of previously awarded federal and state funding, the new development will include more than 1,200 new residential units, a revitalized commercial corridor on Ridge Avenue, and new recreational and community space.
“The Philadelphia Housing Authority continues to make great strides in improving the affordable housing options available to our community, while helping to transform neighborhoods across the city. This sizeable grant award from HUD recognizes these efforts and will help the residents who were temporarily displaced from the demolition of the Blumberg Apartments find alternative options in the private market,” Congressman Fattah said. “I join with HUD in recognizing the extraordinary vision that PHA has for this area, and applaud the progress they’ve made and steps taken in order to create a safer, more vibrant community in the Blumberg/Sharswood neighborhood.”
The funding support comes as part of the Housing Choice Voucher program, which awards specific housing choice vouchers to public housing agencies for relocation and replacement support in connection with a HUD-approved plan to demolish existing public housing developments.
