Moyer Urges House Leaders to Bring Property Tax Bills Up for a Vote

-

HARRISBURG – During a recent visit to Holy Savior Church in Norristown, Rep. Jay Moyer (R-Montgomery) discussed his property tax reform legislation and called on House leaders to bring his bill and all other property tax reform measures to the House floor for a vote.

Moyer noted that in January, he joined 159 of his House colleagues from both sides of the aisle to support a proposal that would completely eliminate school property taxes for more than 600,000 seniors across the Commonwealth – including more than 26,000 here in Montgomery County.

“Despite the overwhelming bipartisan support this bill received, House leaders have chosen to remove it and all other property tax reform measures from the House calendar rather than allow a measure from the opposing party to advance to the Senate,” Moyer said. “It is unconscionable that the majority party would ignore the will of the majority of House members and choose to kill a piece of legislation in order to gain a partisan advantage.”

Moyer called on House leaders to put partisanship aside and bring the property tax reform measure to the House floor for a vote.

“It simply does not matter who gets to claim credit during the next campaign,” said Moyer. “It is abhorrent to me that this kind of blatant partisanship is being allowed to trump sound policy. That is not why you elected me and I will not sit quietly while it takes place.”

Moyer also noted that his own bill, the Senior Citizen Property Tax Freeze Act, which would freeze property tax rates for qualifying seniors at 2007-08 “base year” rates is also sitting idle in committee.

“My measure and all other property tax reform measures deserve to pass or fail on their own merits,” Moyer said. “It is simply unacceptable that they would be allowed die in committee in order to give a political advantage to one party or another.”
